Typical engagement rate by account size
Bigger audiences almost always mean lower per-follower engagement — so judge your rate against your size band, not against a creator 50x your size.
| Account size | Typical rate | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Nano (1k–10k) | 4–5% | Small, tight audiences usually engage most |
| Micro (10k–100k) | 2–3% | The band brands love — reach plus trust |
| Mid (100k–500k) | 1.5–2% | Distribution starts to dilute engagement |
| Macro (500k–1M) | 1–1.5% | Broad audiences, lower per-follower action |
| Mega (1M+) | ~1% | Celebrity-scale reach, passive engagement |
How the math works
This calculator uses the followers-based formula everyone from brands to media kits expects: (average likes + average comments) ÷ followers × 100. Average your last 9–12 posts for a stable number — a single viral reel will lie to you.
The catch is that the formula only describes an average. It cannot tell you which topics earn 3x your rate and which drag it down. That is where SpyShrimp comes in: search any public account and every recent post is scored against that account's own median, engagement is broken out by topic and format, and views-to-like efficiency shows whether you won on distribution or on content — the engagement analysis the calculator cannot give you.
Questions & answers
The standard followers-based formula is (likes + comments) ÷ followers × 100, using the averages from your recent posts. SpyShrimp’s calculator above does this instantly. For deeper analysis, SpyShrimp computes engagement per post from any public account’s actual recent reels, carousels, and photos — no manual entry.
It depends entirely on account size. Nano accounts (1k–10k followers) typically sit at 4–5%, micro accounts at 2–3%, and mega accounts near 1%. The calculator benchmarks your rate against your size band — a 2.5% rate is excellent for a 500k account but weak for a 5k account.
Views measure distribution; likes and comments measure response. Followers-based rates that include views inflate dramatically on viral reels and hide weak content. SpyShrimp separates the two with views-to-like efficiency, so you can see whether a post won on distribution or genuinely resonated.
Because it is the metric brands actually price against — sponsored-post decisions and rate negotiations anchor on engagement, not follower count. It also tells you whether your content still fits your audience: a falling rate usually means your topic mix drifted before your follower count ever shows it.
